That's Sew Julia Review {Plus a Giveaway!}

Recently, I was given the opportunity to sample some products from That's Sew Julia.

That's Sew Julia offers great handmade items, such as children's apparel, owl pillows, nursing covers, ribbon taggie blankets, baby boy diaper cover and tie sets, banners, tooth fairy pillows and more. Every item created and sold at That's Sew Julia is one of a kind and unique.

I was so excited when Julia Shiras, owner of That's Sew Julia, offered to let me review one of the products she sells. I recently had my second child, a boy, and I was given a baby boy diaper cover and neck tie set, in my choice of fabric! After narrowing down my favorites, as she has so many cute options, I finally decided on this one. It's made with blue and brown argyle print and it is absolutely adorable!

This set is a size 6-12 months, which will be perfect for photos later on. By then he will be able to sit up and show off his belly, wearing his cute new diaper cover and tie. And he'll look so dapper wearing his little tie, when we go to church or to special occasions. You can never go wrong with a great, handmade item like this. And the set retails for just $24, so it makes for a thoughtful and affordable gift for any little man!

First off, I really appreciate how she packages and ships her items. They are sent in a poly-mailer, but are also wrapped in their own plastic bag for extra protection. As you can see above, the set came with her business card and washing instructions: very important and useful.

You can see here that the tie closes in the back with a hook and loop, or Velcro, closure system. This is great if you need to make a slight adjustment, based on your baby's neck size.

I also wanted to point out that the back of the tie is tacked together just like a professionally made tie would be. The small, white stitches are done at two points. Although they are difficult to see, this is an important step in giving the tie its shape. The tie is also lined to give it the same stiffness as a store-bought tie, just mini-sized!

The fabric used for this diaper cover and tie set is of very good quality. It is obvious that Julia puts a lot of time and love into her work. Her sewing skills are of a high caliber, as the cover looks like anything you could find in an upscale boutique. Check out some of my other favorite items, found in her Etsy shop.

The Vibrant Summer Banner - So chic and posh for any party!

The Giraffe Garden Citron Dress - I just love the fabrics she paired together!

Julia is such a sweet and fun person to work with. Her work is adorably creative, and her prices can't be beat! Please check out her shop for all that she offers, in case I beat you to it! Since this review, I have purchased not only the hummingbird nursing cover shown in the above photos, but also the star banner shown in her logo photo. I look forward to seeing what else she lists in the future that I MUST HAVE!

Here, Julia tells us a little bit about herself.
"I've always enjoyed being creative and have dabbled in practically everything it seems. It wasn't until I was pregnant with my first son, who is 4 1/2 now, when I decided to try my hand at making a nursing cover. News got out among my friends and pretty soon I was making several for baby showers as well as selling them.
One of the best parts about sewing was my trips to the fabric store. I love it! And before babies, I worked in the interior design field for over 10 years as a purchaser/project coordinator and found it fascinating. One of my favorite things to do was walk the aisles of fabrics and help designers find alternates to their discontinued fabrics. Some people would find it dull, but not me. I love to help and research. Someone has to do it!
Coming back to present time...In 2011 life brought big change. Three months after our family of four moved to Sacramento, my grandma passed away. When I returned to San Diego, my mom gave me my grandmas sewing machine. It's a gift and absolute beauty. I knew I needed to put it to good use, but wasn't sure how. I soon found out that being a stay at home mom with two young children in a new city wasn't a curse, but an actual blessing. After seeing many ladies on Facebook post pictures of pillowcase dresses got my find reeling and wondering if it was capable of making one too. The funny thing is that I really did stay away from post girly frilly things until this past year.
I decided to pick out a few fabrics and teach myself how to sew. I made a dress and posted it on Facebook and right away three friends asked me to duplicate the dress for their daughters. That gave me the push to branch out and trying new things. In March I changed my name from Photo Julia (I used to do my photography) to That's Sew Julia and am just shy of reaching 1000 fans.
My biggest seller by far are my diaper cover and necktie sets for babies/toddlers as well as birthday sets. My focus is to create custom and unique handmade crafts and sewings such as dirty and clean magnet signs, diaper covers and neckties, tooth fairy pillows, nursing covers and banners...just to name a few. Honestly, I love to create and it brings me great joy to provide my clients with useful products they can afford."
